About Tom Searcy

Tom Searcy is a business strategist, keynote speaker, and the author of two collections of personal essays: Doodles: Life in the Margins and Trades: Life Tuition Is Expensive. Both books were published in 2017 through Blue Water Publishing.

The stories in these pages are not polished memoirs. They are the raw, often embarrassing, occasionally triumphant accounts of a life lived at full speed — from fraternity bottle fights to heart attacks on planes, from marriage proposals in hot air balloons to encounters with Suge Knight at the Fontainebleau.

Tom began writing these stories for his children. He realized, as many of us do, that the people we love most know almost nothing about who we were before they arrived. The stories that shaped us — the stupid decisions, the lucky breaks, the moments of unexpected grace — tend to disappear unless someone writes them down.

So he wrote them down. With honesty, with humor, and with a willingness to be the fool in his own stories. The result is two books that feel less like memoirs and more like sitting across from a very good storyteller who has had just enough wine to tell the truth.

"I don't write very much about sex. Maybe I should, just to boost sales. I'd write about violence, but my experience has been that I lose most of the time."

Tom lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is an identical twin, a father, a husband, and a man who has made peace with the fact that he will probably never win a fight against a bottle of gin.
